CACAO – Don’t we all love our chocolate…but what is the “good chocolate”?

Categories:

“Good chocolate” actually starts as cacao, the raw and unprocessed form of cocoa and is the primary ingredient used to make chocolate. It begins as a pod and has a more bitter taste than the processed cocoa.

Cacao is good for you, especially when consumed in its purest form or in dark chocolate with a high cacao content of 70% or higher.

Here are some potential health benefits of cacao:

  1. Rich in Antioxidants: Cacao is a powerful source of antioxidants, specifically flavonoids. These antioxidants help neutralize free radicals in the body, reducing oxidative stress and the risk of chronic diseases.
  2. Cardiovascular Health: Studies suggest that cacao consumption may improve heart health by promoting healthy blood circulation, reducing blood pressure, and improving cholesterol levels.
  3. Mood and Cognitive Benefits: Cacao contains compounds such as theobromine and phenethylamine, which can have positive effects on mood and may act as mild stimulants. Additionally, cacao consumption has been linked to improved cognitive function.
  4. Nutrient Content: Cacao is rich in essential minerals like magnesium, iron, copper, and manganese. These minerals play important roles in various bodily functions, including muscle function, immune support, and energy production.
  5. Skin Health: Some studies indicate that cacao consumption may help protect the skin against UV-induced damage due to its high antioxidant content.

Cacao itself has many health benefits, but many commercial chocolate products contain added sugars, unhealthy fats, and other ingredients that can offset the potential advantages. To get the most benefits, buy organic cacao powder or choose minimally processed dark chocolate with a high cacao content and consume it in moderation.

When you go to buy cacao, make sure it lists the amount of flavanols on the packaging because that will let you know that the manufacturer is aware of the health benefits cacao possesses and isn’t modifying the product. I use cacao in my smoothies…yum.
